Bergdorf Goodman Holiday Windows 2016 Destination Extraordinary
Posted on December 28 2016Bergdorf Goodman NYC embellishes its legendary holiday windows along 5th Avenue this year in flora, fauna, and bejeweled primates. In "delirious remakes of the classic dioramas seen in natural history museums," explains visionary David Hoey, senior director of visual presentation for the New York department store explains, he also cited the paintings of Henri Rousseau and 12th-century Chinese watercolor mountainscapes as inspiration for the larger-than-life scenes. There are five fantastical still life depictions under this year's theme "Destination Extraordinary"—The Book Club, The Scenic Route, The Winter Garden, The Hitchhiker, and Bird's-Eye View— each window will transport you to a different lush locale from a dense green jungle, frozen winter garden, to a magical lagoon. These iconic displays take nine months of imagination and showcase the work of specially commissioned artisans, who create hand-painted backdrops, highly embellished objects, and unique set pieces. The Book club window, the first of the front main windows, is a jungle of impressively bejeweled gorillas reading books around a swinging fashionista. The Scenic Route window presents a fabulously dressed adventurer walking a tightrope over a sea of fish in a magical overgrown lagoon. The Winging it window reveals an enchanting scene in a verdigris greenhouse. Surrounded by a pair of 10 foot praying mantis and other giant garden insects, it is said to represent an impromptu butterfly expedition but one can also see a giant insect hunt for curious young lady. The Hitchhiker window is a high-fashion fairy tale transporting you out to the cactus West. A Bird's Eye view is a sleeping beauty surround by what seems to be inspired by a 12th-century Chinese watercolor mountainscape. The windows around the corner on 58th street and across the street at the Men's store are a little less praised but the designs are all apart of the big theme. The artistic details are less then the main five windows but the fashion and charm are equally as intriguing and appreciated. Visit Bergdorf Goodman at 754 Fifth Avenue near 58th Street at night to see the whole block glowing green. The holiday windows will be on display through January 2, 2017.
